  • WHAT IS PRAYER?
    - Prayer is simply “drawing near to God”. James 4:8 and Psalm 73:28 - Prayer was a hallmark of Jesus’s life and ministry. His disciples took notice and asked him to teach them how to pray. We see that laid out in the Lord’s Prayer from Matthew 6: 5-13
  • WHY SHOULD I CARE ABOUT MY PRAYER LIFE?
    - Prayer helps us gain an understanding of WHO God is, His identity. Psalm 145:8-21 - Prayer gives us strength to confess and avoid temptation and sin in our life. - Prayer can provide us with a way to ask/seek God’s understanding/will for our life, to align our will to His. It also teaches us to intercede on the behalf of others, according to His will. - Prayer helps develop our relationship with Him and understand He is our authority. - Prayer draws us closer to Christ, submitting ourselves to Him, and in His teaching, helps us to be more like Him. - Prayer invites the Holy Spirit to guide, comfort, and counsel us. - Prayer can be powerful and effective!
  • HOW DOES THIS CURRICULUM/STUDY WORK?
We have a LEADER’s GUIDE and a STUDENT GUIDE. The Leader’s Guide is designed to give talking points and tips to guide a youth leader in teaching a class of students. The Student Guide is almost identical, but has fill-in-the blanks to be used as a workbook. It also has different promptings pertaining to students.
  • HOW LONG IS THIS STUDY?
We have set this study up to be SIX sessions. You can implement your time frame as it's applicable to you and your ministry. Our experience is 6 weeks, with one session each week.
  • HOW LONG DOES EACH SESSION TAKE TO TEACH?
That is up to you, your teaching style, the discussions and questions from your students! On average, each session takes approximately 1 hour to 1 ½ hours.
  • HOW DO I DIVIDE THE SESSION BEETWEEN "CLASS TIME" AND "PRAYER" TIME?
Each session will build upon the previous. Your first few sessions, you will have longer “class” time than “prayer” time. But as you get towards the end of your 6 sessions, your “class” time will be shorter than your “prayer” time. The goal is to allow more time in prayer for your students each session. Remember they are adding a new element to their prayer life each session, which will require more time in God’s presence! Be patient with your students and allow them plenty of time to get comfortable in their prayer time.
  • IN THE FIRST SESSION, IT SAYS THAT WE ARE TAUGHT TO "PRAY OUT LOUD". DO WE HAVE TO PRAY OUT LOUD?
Good question! In this study I encourage “crying out to the Lord with our voice” just like David did in Psalm 3:1-5. I want our students to be confident and comfortable before the Lord and you wouldn’t believe how this breaks the barrier in an intimate conversation with God! It also helps with limiting distractions and focus.
  • DO WE HAVE TO PRAY TOGETHER IN SMALL GROUPS OR CAN I PRAY ALONE?
    - For the purpose of this study, I encourage students to pray together in small groups of no more than 3 or 4. The reason for this is not only to encourage each other, but also for accountability. - Also, I encourage you to pray on your own throughout this study and beyond!! It will continue to grow you and bring you closer to God.
  • WHERE IS THE BEST PLACE TO PRAY WHEN TEACHING THIS STUDY?
In my experience at my local church, we want to make sure we are exposing our students to the concept of “reverence” for Christ. We hold our classes at our church location with the “class” time in one of our Sunday school rooms and once we dismiss for “prayer” time, we go to the sanctuary. We remind the students that there are no phones, smart watches, keys, drinks, snacks, etc that could be a distraction and they are welcome to remove their shoes……because we are entering the holy presence of our Lord and approaching His throne. We want them to understand the presence of God!
  • HOW DO I ENCOURAGE MY STUDENTS TO CONTINUE PRAYING EVEN AFTER THIS STUDY IS OVER?
At my local church, we have encouraged our small group youth leaders to continue to pray together with their students. We have also set up an accountability prayer night once a month….same time/day each month and whoever can make it can make it! And finally we encourage our students to come to the church anytime they feel led to pray.
